Demon Slayer Season 4, Episode 1 Recap and Reaction

To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji, begins with an exciting scene, where the Wind and Serpent Hashira, infiltrate a secluded pagoda to save a kidnapped girl. A 20(ish)v2 battle proceeds, with the Hashira laying waste to the gaggle of Demons. The scene concludes with the girl being rescued and the kidnapping Demon escaping into Muzan’s Infinity Castle.

The remainder of the episode is demur by comparison: The remaining Hashira meet with the wife of Kagaya, as he is no longer well enough to meet the group in person, and they discuss future plans to increase the overall strength of the Demon Slayer Corps. Tanjiro is still in recovery and Nezuko is learning how to speak again. The episode concludes with the crow of Kagaya locating and then recruiting Tamayo into working with the Corps in an effort to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji.

Impressions

While I like Demon Slayer, I would not consider myself anywhere close to a die hard fan. So after catching up on the latest episode of the new season of My Hero Academia, I was pleasantly surprised, and excited, that the debut episode of Demon Slayer’s newest season was dropping soon. However, once  the opening scene concluded, any initial excitement descended faster than a roller coaster after reaching its apex. I found the inaugural episode of Demon Slayer’s 4th season a bit ho-hum.

The opening scene was fire! The rest of the episode, not so much…

Tanjiro and Nezuko had no notable scenes in the episode, as his scenes primarily consisted of scarfing down food in the infirmary, while she repeatedly did nothing but say Insouke’s name in an attempt to re-learn the human language. One sorta interesting revelation, was that Tanjiro’s sword that he procured from the puppet in the Swordsmith Village arc, is now “officially” repaired, with the single character description of “Destroy,” which differs from the engravements on the other weapons. Apparently, there is a hierarchy in swords with Tanjiro’s among the top. Its clear that something special is in the works.

The Hashira meeting was the key point to the episode, as it appears that Demon Slayer is now encroaching its end game. Learning that the scars that the Love and Mist Hashira (as well as Tanjiro) developed from their battles aids in their recovery, the remaining Hashira are now conducting a corps wide training.  Its notable that Tomioka will not be participating in the training, where we the audience, will likely learn why in next week’s episode.

The last interesting tid bit from this episode was that Tamayo, who gave the initial inclination that Nezuko could once again revert back to becoming human, is also in fact a demon, and will be joining the remaining Demon Slayer Corps in their preparations. As this episode was packed full of exposition, here’s hoping that the action and dramatics will start to gain steam in the upcoming episodes.
